EP 14: Raising Awareness of Autism While Living Abroad
Today, we will be talking about raising children with special needs but more specifically about Autism. When I started this podcast I was only thinking of how hard it is raising kids in a different culture and country, but I didn’t realise that there are parents living the international life with children that have special needs. Talk about double whammy on the difficulty factor.
We have some superhero moms and dads out there, not only living abroad but in their home country raising their kids that have autism or have special needs. You guys are amazing and shout out to you all!!! You all are great parents!!!
On Today’s episode, I have Therese Christensen, an international mom from the Philippines. Her husband is danish/filippino and they have 1 son together, named Fredrik. They are living in Denmark AND Frederik has Autism.
We will be discussing with Therese about her life in Denmark with her family, and raising her son with Autism. She also wrote a children’s book along with her son that can build awareness for other parents and people out in the world.
About Therese Christensen:
Therese Christensen is a feminist living with her husband and son on the Danish sunshine island of Bornholm. She was born in the Philippines and is an adventurer at heart. She is constantly inspired by her wonderful and amazing neurodivergent son. She completed her MA in Culture, Communication, and Globalisation from Aalborg University and has worked professionally as a consultant advocating for women and children to live a life free of violence. She was awarded the GlobalPinoy 2018 (Denmark) award for her work with the Filipino migrant community in Denmark. Upon leaving Copenhagen for the island, she decided to give her first love - writing - another chance, and this book with her son is hopefully the first of the many.
